Meet the Members of Studio LaScarfa

Studio LaScarfa is a celebration of the intersection of the talents of:

Robert K. Chen - Prior to studying art and design at OCADU, Robert trained as a Goldsmith at George Brown College in the Jewellery Arts program where he graduated with honours. During his final year at college he gained recognition by winning “Best of Show” in his first competition, the 2008 Zilbersmuck “Formula” National Juried Competition, with his My Formula is: 1 composition. Featured in the August 2008 edition of Jewellery Business magazine, Robert states that beauty should be a multi-sensual experience, vision and tactile feel combined together to create timeless beauty. “It’s the graceful curves, aggressive lines, the sensual feel of surface and weight that are the hallmark of great jewellery designs that influence my aesthetics”.

Loretta Faveri – As a Fibre Major at OCADU, Loretta has been exploring the use of fibre as a material for creating 3-D installations as well as designing and making garments for the body.  She is the recipient of the Ellen Adams Award and the D.Kristjanson / Purchase Award both for her work in textile and print design. Simplicity, elegance and ease of wear are the essential elements of her designs.

Colin Hutzan - Colin is interested in bringing craft elements into the design sphere by taking aspects of popular culture subject matter and intermingling them with a craft and detail-oriented approach. Colin attended Ryerson University in the fashion communications program previous to enrolling at OCADU in the Material Art and Design program, specializing in jewelry but dabbling in the fibre studio to further perfect drafting and fashion design skill. Colin was among 40 choice exhibitors at a Canada-wide jewelry exhibition entitled “Secret Identity” and working in fashion management alongside school broadens his business and clientele based sensibilities. With a broad range of skill in various art and design practices as well as an interest in how craft can be integrated into the mass-market, Colin brings a multitude of tools to the table.

Sarah Lavoie - Sarah has a background in textiles at the Ontario College of Art and Design University and has worked with textile artist Noelle Hamlyn. Her education in the art of textiles as well as training in the design of handcrafted pocket books has given her a unique style in the creation of handbags. Sarah’s handbags are created with a variety of fabrics, but mostly silks and cottons that she has screen printed by hand. Her handbags are always functional and often have many pockets because she believes that organization is important and that functionality is just as crucial as aesthetics.
